New Sept. Event + Openings!

Wednesday, September 07, 2016

SVGD Volunteers:
I've just put another new event on our web site.  We will be helping serve lunch at Cafe 180 again.  This is a restaurant that doesn't have any prices!  People pay what they can for their meals which enables everyone to be able to eat.
I can still use 3 more volunteers at the Taste of Sertoma event on the 17th.  Please sign up if you can help.  This Saturday's Big Chili Cookoff & Music Fest benefiting the mountain Firefighters has filled.  If you sign up you will be contacted if we get a volunteer cancellation.
Details for all of these events are given below.

NEW EVENT:

Serving Lunch at Cafe 180 benefiting those who can't pay for their meals, Sat.,Sept. 24,10AM-12:30PM, 5 Volunteers are needed to serve customers, help prepare food, yes, even help clean up!  Cafe 180's mission is to reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.  Not only do they serve up delicious food, they serve up respect, dignity & self sufficiency.  We helped them in March for the first time and really enjoyed the experience.  Plus we each had a great meal when we completed our shift!  They say:  "we've all relied on the kindness of others at certain times in our lives... For those who have enough, it's a chance to eat well and do well. For those who are struggling, it's a chance to eat in a dignified manner.  We're not about hand outs.  We're about giving people a hand up..."  Volunteers need to wear comfortable shoes & anyone with long hair needs to have it pulled back.  The group will have cafe' shirts to wear when they get there.  What a great opportunity!

OTHER EVENTS:

Taste of Sertoma benefiting Bridges of Silence, Hear-to-Work Program & Cowboy Veterans Cowboy Up; Sat. Sept. 17, 5:15PM-8PM,(We still need 3 Volunteers for this event) 6 Volunteers are needed to help watch the food tables for portion size and perhaps keep the food warm in some instances.  They have multiple restaurants donating food for the event but they are not providing staff to serve the food.  There will be live music, free wine & beer samples as well as the food, and both a silent auction and a live auction.  Attire for the event is business casual.  The event runs from 6-9PM and is being held at Hanger 1 at the Wings over the Rockies.  The Bridges of Silence learning center helps at-risk youth to reach their full potential.  The Hear-to-Work Program helps adults with hearing issues who are not eligible for hearing support who are looking for work or are in danger of losing their jobs dues to a hearing disability.  The Cowboy Up  program raises funds for wounded veterans, service members, and first responders suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disordre & traumatic brain injuries.

Chili Cook-Off & Music Festival benefiting Firefighters, Sat. Sept. 10, 11:30AM-3:30PM,This event has filled.  If you sign up you will be notified if we get a cancellation) 6 Volunteers are needed to run the voting booth.  There will be more than 60 chili cooks vying for prizes and recognition. Voting is done both by the public and special judges.  The voting booth is supposed to be a very fun location.  Even though we will be at the booth the volunteers can take breaks and wander around and taste chili.  The event actually runs from 10AM-6PM so it would be fun to car pool and stay for the rest of the event.  The excitement only begins with chili tasting- there are three top-flight bands over the course of the day, firefighter competitions, dozens of food vendors, beer and margarita booths, as well as arts and crafts vendors.  The event is located at Buchanan Park in Evergreen, www.BigChili.org. This event is being sponsored by Evergreen's Blue Spruce Kiwanis to benefit volunteer fire & rescue departments in the mountain communities.  Funds from the event help the firefighters obtain equipment that they could not get any other way- radios, protective gear, etc.  We're very lucky to be helping them and were specifically asked because of the great group of volunteers we recently provided to Mt. Evans Hospice.

EVENT CAPTAINS NEEDED:
I could really use a couple more Event Captains.  It is a fun position and is much needed.  If you've attended a couple events so you know somewhat how we operate and would like to be our volunteer team leader for some events please get in contact with me.  I plan the events but need good people to check in our group and make sure everyone is having a good time & doing what the organization needs to have done.  I do provide training information for Captains and have them co-Captain prior to doing it solo.  I look forward to hearing from you at event@svgd.org.

 OTHER EVENTS:.

End of Summer BBQ Social benefiting Food Bank, Sat. Aug. 27, 4-8PM.  Limit of 48 attendees. The Board has decided to have a end-of-summer fun event for our SVGD volunteer group.  We are also inviting our GOGC (Going Out for A Good Cause) MeetUp group so there should be quite a few people.  This is a great opportunity to take advantage of the great weather, get to know fellow SVGD members and also meet some new people from GOGC.  We have reserved a park in North Aurora (exact location will be given once you register.)  The well-groomed park features three covered picnic shelters with numerous tables, grills, a permanent restroom, pond, grassed area, playground and close parking.  Please bring the meat of your choice to BBQ, a dish to share (appetizer, salad, or dessert), beer or wine if you prefer an alcoholic beverage (we did purchase a permit), and also a canned item(s) that we can donate to a local Food Bank.  SVGD will provide lemonade, plates, utensils, napkins & cups.  We are planning on playing some games if you'd like.  So far we have croquet & ladder ball.  Please feel free to bring another game.  Also, you can bring a friend.  Please let us know when you register if you'd like to bring a game and, if so, what you're bringing so we don't have duplications and if you are bringing a friend so we know the number of people who will be attending. This should be a fun opportunity to close out the Summer, have a good time, meet people, and help a good cause!  I hope to see you there!

Swing at Cancer Golf Classic Event benefiting My Lifeline Colorado, Mon.Aug. 29, 1-5:30PM,(WE STILL NEED 3 VOLUNTEERS!!) 6 Volunteers are needed to help with the Hole-In-One portion, the Yarn Sale/Keg Pourer portion, and the Putting Contest on the Practice Green.  Lunch, drinks, and snacks will be provided about 30 minutes before the shift starts.  We helped them last year and the group enjoyed the experience.  This year's event is going to be at the Red Rocks Country Club.  MyLifeLine.org is a nonprofit organization that encourages cancer patients and caregivers to create free personalized websites. Their mission is to empower patients to build an online support community of family and friends to foster connection, inspiration, and healing.

New July Volunteer Event!

Saturday, July 02, 2016

SVGD Volunteers:
Well, it looks like our booth at the  Cherry Creek Arts Festival is off to a good start.  I was down there this morning helping to get everything set up.  It's the first time we've run a Lemonade/Snow Cone booth so there was a little learning curve.  All of our shifts have filled through July 4th. I'll have more of an update after we complete the event.  If you happen to be at the festival please look us up on the SW corner of 2nd Avenue/Clayton Street.
I've just put a new event on our web site that is happening a week from tomorrow.  We will be helping the French Alliance again!  They are not doing the Summer Soiree at which we normally assist but are doing a fun Bastille Day Festival that is open to the public!  Please see all the details below.

NEW EVENT:

Bastille Day Festival benefiting the French Alliance, Sun. July 10, 11AM-5PM.  6 Volunteers are needed to help in their food booths, making crepes, and serving soft drinks to the public.  We have helped them for several years at their Summer Soiree and always love it.  They are not doing the Summer Soiree this year.  Instead, the Bastille Day festival is an all-day event that is open to the public in Centennial Gardens park, just next to Elitch's Amusement Park.  The organization wants our volunteers to also be able to enjoy the event so will give several breaks during the time period.  The French Alliance was founded in 1897 and is one of the oldest non profits in the Denver Metro area.  It is the only French language, culture, & resource center in Colorado.

NEW EVENTS:

Party at Mick's House!, Sat. June 18, 5PM-?. Many of you know Mick Conlon who is one of our SVGD members.  He has an Annual Party at his home in the DU area.  He is inviting our SVGD members to attend!  Mick will provide the meat, side dishes, some of the beer & wine, and lots of friends who will be there.  He is asking that you bring either beer or wine to share. Get ready for a good time!!  We do ask that you register so we know how many people will be attending.  You will be given the exact address after you register.  See you Saturday!!  We haven't had a social for awhile and this sounds like a great opportunity to have a fun time.

Cherry Creek Arts Festival- Sat. July 2nd thru Mon. July 4th.  Six shifts are available on the web site. Please sign up for the one(s) that work best for you. Volunteers are needed to help at the Lemonade/Snowcone Booth. We are once again going to be doing our biggest SVGD fundraiser of the year at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival.  There have been big changes at the Festival this year.  They are only allowing 9 non profit organizations to have booths as fundraisers!  We were chosen as one of the nine from the entire Denver Metro Community!  They have a waiting list of other non profits who wish they can participate.  Our volunteers have been very reliable & professional and they appreciate our help.  As you may recall, we've always done a wine booth for them.  The wine sales have been going down annually so there will be no more wine booths.  The wine will be one of the products sold at their beer & alcohol booths.  One of their best booths (for fundraising) is their Lemonade/Snowcone booth.  We have been selected to run the one at 2nd & Clayton.  We will be having 6 shifts over the three-day period.  Five of the SVGD Board members will be booth supervisors. Might you be able to help?  We contract to have 4 volunteers on each shift and I need to get the names in to them by June 30th.  This is a fun experience & your help is very much appreciated by SVGD!  Please sign up for shift(s) that work for you.

EVENTS:

10th Annual Stray Cat Strut benefiting Divine Feline- Thurs. June 16, 5-9:30P (We can still use one volunteer for this event) 6-8 Volunteers are needed to help with check in, check out, and the Silent Auction.  This event will be held at Hudson Gardens.  We helped them last December at their Olive or Twist event.  They were very impressed with our volunteers!  Divine Feline has provided quality & affordable spay/neuter & medical services for the past 20 years.  They say that there are still as many as 100,000 homeless felines on the streets of Denver!

Dinner for Chinook Fund Grantees, Thurs. June 23, 5-8PM- (We still need three volunteers for this event) 6 Volunteers are needed to welcome attendees and grantees, help with sign in, process donations, serve food & drink, plus help share in the celebration of the amazing work that the grantees have accomplished in the past year.  The event will be held in Northeast Denver.  Chinook Fund supports community-based organizations working on issues of social and economic justice throughout Colorado. A community foundation, Chinook Fund pools the resources of the community to provide grants  grassroots organizations making a positive systemic impact to improve the quality of life for all Coloradans.

Another June Event + Volunteer Openings

Saturday, June 04, 2016

SVGD Volunteers:
What a great group of June events!  We have a good group signed up to attend tonight's Larimer Street Chalk Fest & the weather is great!
I've just put another event on the web site.  We will be assisting the Chinook Fund again at their Grantee Dinner.  This organization provides funding for so many start-up non profits.  It's a great chance to hear of their achievements during the past year.
WE MAY NEED TO CANCEL THIS THURSDAY'S SOCIAL DINNER FOR GLOBAL ORPHAN PREVENTION as we have not had enough registrations for the event.  If you'd like to attend please sign up by Monday so we can make a decision as to whether our SVGD group will be attending this worthwhile and fun event.
We can still use 1 volunteer next Saturday if you'd like to attend the Summer Art Market.  I think everyone is just recovering from the Holiday, graduations, etc. as no one except the Event Captain has signed up yet for the Stray Cat Strut at Hudson Gardens.  I know our group enjoys this event so here's a reminder to please sign up and help them.
I hope to see you soon at an upcoming event!

Summer Art Market benefiting the Art Students League, Sat. June 11, 1:30-6PM,(We can still use one more volunteer at this event) 6 volunteers are needed to help man a beer/alcohol booth.  This is another great event at which we've helped for many years.  Usually when we help at the beverage booth at this event our group seems to have the best experience.  There will be over 250 artists exhibiting at the event which is located in South Denver.  At the Art Students League of Denver, every student has the opportunity to study with regionally and nationally recognized working artists in a wide selection of media. They provide hands-on experiences for all ages and ability levels. The event is held South of the Downtown area.  There is free parking.

10th Annual Stray Cat Strut benefiting Divine Feline- Thurs. June 16, 5-9:30PM,(WE STILL NEED 5-7 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS ONE!) 6-8 Volunteers are needed to help with check in, check out, and the Silent Auction.
