SVGD NEWSLETTER
April 29, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
We just had a fantastic weekend with two events!  We helped Cafe 180 that provides meals for people who can't afford to pay for their meals on Saturday & ran the Cherry Creek Sneak Beer Garden on Sunday helping to provide funds so that good food doesn't go into the dumpsters & landfills but, rather, goes to people who need the food!  Thank you to all of you who volunteered at the events!
I've just put another event on our SVGD web site so there are now two May events (the first this upcoming weekend) for which you can register.  We will be helping at the registration area for the MS Walk in City Park this upcoming Saturday and will be helping at The Denver Botanic Gardens Spring Plant Sale the following Saturday.  Please sign up soon if you can help at either of these events.  The weather is supposed to be great this Saturday so we should have a fantastic time while helping a good cause!  I know that MS has touched many of our lives and many of us know family and/or friends who have been impacted by this illness.
Details for both of these events are given below.  I hope to see you there as we continue to give back to our community!

MAY EVENTS:

MS Walk Registration Tent, Sat.,May 4 6-11:30AM, 6 Volunteers are needed. This event will be held at Denver City Park.  This is a 5K Run & Walk.  Walk MS brings together a community of passionate people for one powerful cause: to end MS forever. And with every step they take and every dollar they raise... they're that much closer. The National MS Society is the largest private funder of MS research in the world.  Right now the Denver event already has over 2,000 registered participants! Their goal is $850,000 in fundraising and 5,500 registrants.  It's an exciting event where they have a program and lots going on.

Spring Plant Sale benefiting Denver Botanic Gardens, Sat. May 11th, 7:15AM- 12:30PM, 6 Volunteers are neededWe will be helping as cashier's assistants who help the customers with their carts containing the plants they wish to purchase. This is one of the Botanic Gardens biggest events.  They will provide both breakfast & lunch as well as snacks, coffee, and beverages.  Also all volunteers will get 10% off any plants they wish to purchase as the event does continue on after our shift ends as well as a 10% discount at their Cafe if they would like to make a purchase there! We have done this event previously and the volunteers really liked it.  This should be a fun experience!

NEED EVENT CAPTAINS: Right now I am short on Event Captains due to several people now having health, work, or other personal issues.  I can't lead all the events myself so really depend on having Event Captains so we can offer several events each month.  As an Event Captain you do not have to plan the event. You confirm the attendance for the volunteers who have registered and give them the event information. Then you attend the event to check in the group and make sure everyone knows what to do. I provide a training sheet & information on the event to you.  I could really use a few new Event Captains!  You get to pick the events that you wish to lead.  Please let me know if you would like to help.  It's a fun position!!

FUTURE EVENTS:
The following events are going to be upcoming but I don't have either the Event Captains or all the details yet.  Some of our members do like to get their schedule planned as soon as possible so I'm listing these so you can "pencil them" in to your schedule.  I will let you know when I have all the information & have put them on the web site so you can "officially" register.

Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day)- Victory for Veterans "Flower on Every Grave" event at Ft. Logan Cemetary- AM
Wed, May 29th We will be helping Warren Village with their Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
June 1- Chalk Fest at Larimer Square- we will be running an alcohol booth from 9:30AM-2PM- in support of the Larimer Square Arts Assn.
Sat. & Sun., June 15th & 16th- Our Fundraiser at PrideFest in Civic Center Park- you are welcome to invite friends and fellow employees
Fri., Sat.,& Sun., July 5th, 6th, & 7th- Our Fundraiser at Cherry Creek Arts Festival- again you are welcome to invite friends and fellow employees

If you know of any non-profit organizations that can use a group of 6 or more volunteers during an upcoming evening or weekend please feel free to give me the information as I'll be glad to explore the possibility of organizing a group of our SVGD volunteers to assist!  Thank you!

April 23, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I just put another event on our SVGD web site for which you can now register!  We will be helping the MS Walk on Saturday, May 4that their Registration Tent!  This is a new event for us and is for a very worthwhile cause.  I hope to see you there!
Meanwhile, we can still use some volunteers for this weekend!  We can use 1 more volunteer at Cafe 180 on Saturday and 4 more people at the Cherry Creek Sneak beer booth on Sunday! The runners & walkers at the Cherry Creek Sneak all get a free coupon for a beer after they finish.  They are a great group & we'll be busy as we become a very popular booth after the races.  It is such a fun event with so many activities happening!  We'll be very short-handed without the 4 additional volunteers so please sign up soon if you can help!  Thank you!

 APRIL EVENTS:

Cafe 180 benefiting those who can't pay for their meals, Sat.,April 27th 12:30-3PM, (We can still use 1 volunteer on Saturday) 5 total Volunteers will be assisting to serve customers, help prepare food, yes, even help clean up!  Cafe 180's mission is to reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.  Not only do they serve up delicious food, they serve up respect, dignity & self sufficiency.  We helped them a few times and really enjoyed the experience.  Plus we each had a great meal when we completed our shift!  They say:  "we've all relied on the kindness of others at certain times in our lives... For those who have enough, it's a chance to eat well and do well. For those who are struggling, it's a chance to eat in a dignified manner.  We're not about hand outs.  We're about giving people a hand up..."  Volunteers need to wear comfortable shoes & anyone with long hair needs to have it pulled back.  The group will have cafe' shirts to wear when they get there. The location for the event is near Hampden/Broadway.   What a great opportunity!

Cherry Creek Sneak, Sun.April 28th, 8:30AM-Noon. (WE STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SUNDAY!!) 6 total Volunteers will be assisting. We will be beer pourers for this event. Many of our patrons will be the runners in the event who receive a beer certificate.  This event is  such a well-known Denver tradition.  The race is on 1st Avenue, in the Cherry Creek area.  They also have a great after party with a costume contest, music, vendors, etc.  Since we will be "beer pourers" we won't have to be there super early like the volunteers for the registration etc. (6AM for them!)  The Cherry Creek Sneak offers run/walk courses for all levels.  They partner with the We Don't Waste non profit so that food goes to those who need it rather than landfills.  The Sneak’s after-race festivities have turned into Denver’s biggest block party—post-race fun draws nearly 20,000 racers, friends, and family for music, cool vendors, a costume contest,  and a Kids’ Fun Zone sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Proceeds benefit Food Bank of the Rockies, a non-profit organization providing food and supplies to more than 1000 hunger-relief programs in Northern Colorado and Wyoming.

We have helped with this for several years & our volunteers always have a fantastic time!!  They always put on a great program plus literally raise hundreds of thousands of dollars!  It's one of the most successful silent auctions that we attend.  It's a lot of fun and we always have a good time at the Coors Event Center in Boulder.  We will be glad to arrange carpooling if you'd like. The dollars they raise help many abandoned & needed pets.  They treat us well as volunteers, provide dinner before we start, and there's lots going on during the event.  You'll be happy you helped & came to see this fantastic event!

New April Volunteer Event + 2 March Events Need Volunteers!

SVGD NEWSLETTER
March 11, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I just put a new April volunteer event on our web site!  We will be helping at a Prom Dress event that provides free prom dresses, shoes, and accessories for low-income teens so they can have as fantastic a time at their prom as their peers.  This is the first time we've done this event & I think it will be a great, worthwhile experience.
Also, our last two March events still need volunteers!!!  We've been filling all of our events this year but I'm getting a little concerned as WE STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS FOR EACH OF THE UPCOMING TWO EVENTS, ONE BEING THIS SATURDAY!  Part of that might be my error from last week regarding the date.  I hope you're able to help as we never want to let down the non-profit organizations once we make a commitment to them.  We want them to know that they can depend upon us.  Thanks for considering the opportunities!
Our 2019 Board had its first meeting of the year this past week.  It looks like we've got a great group and should be making a lot of progress during the upcoming year!!

Need Saturday Volunteers + New 9Health Fair Event!

SVGD NEWSLETTER
March 4, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
Wow!  What weather, huh!  We've had events scheduled the past two weekends during our "weather events".  We did have to cancel the Clothing Donation Sorting event at the Jeffco Action Center a week ago due to the amount of snow as they were advising that no one drive and we never want our volunteers to get injured trying to attend an event.  We did, however, help the American Lung Assn. yesterday at their Fight for Air Climb even though it was very cold.  We were inside and 5 of the 6 volunteers (including myself) were able to make it!!  Thank you to those who were able to help at yesterday's cold event!!  Your help was greatly appreciated & I know we all enjoyed seeing the firefighters in full gear go up all those steps for the last of the climbers!!
We still need 4 volunteers to help at the Jeffco Action Center this Saturday for their "Beautiful Junk Sale".  This event is also inside and the weather is finally supposed to be nice this upcoming weekend!  Please sign up soon if you can help.  I don't want to let them down again since we had to cancel the event with them a week ago.
Also, I just put a new event on our web site so that you can start registering.  We will be helping at the 9Health Fair on Sunday, March 31st.  I'm sure most of us know what a great contribution these Fairs make in our community.  You do not have to have a medical background to help for our volunteer duties.
I look forward to seeing you soon at an upcoming event!  Thanks so much for your help!

We still need 3 people to help this Sunday morning at the Fight For Air Climb benefiting the American Lung Assn.  We will be in charge of the registration table.  The event is inside and there is free parking.  Please sign up soon if you can help as they really need 6 people at the registration table & I don't want to let them down.
I just put the "Beautiful Junk Sale" event on the web site so you can now sign up for that.  It will be on Sat. March 16th.  This is a unique and fun event!
I could use a few more SVGD Event Captains if you are interested.  I provide training and you co-Captain before doing it yourself so you can see how we do it.  I still find and confirm the event.  The Event Captain's job isn't hard, is a lot of fun, but I do need people to lead some of the events as I can't lead them all myself.  Please email me if you're interested in getting more information.  I email out a list of upcoming events to the Event Captains and they select ones they would like to lead that meet their schedules.
Thanks to all of you for helping our Denver Metro Community at these upcoming events!

SVGD NEWSLETTER
February 21, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
We've had a volunteer cancellation for this Saturday's Clothing Donation Sorting in Jefferson County so please sign up soon if you can help so I can get you all the details.  Thanks!
I've just put a new event on the SVGD web site so you can now sign up.  We will be helping the American Lung Assn. at their Fight For Air Climb at Denver's tallest building on March 3rd.
Also, I've just added some new events on the list below of future events so you can check out the list and pencil in any that interest you.  I will let you know when I've got Event Captains and have them on the web site.
I could use a few more SVGD Event Captains if you are interested.  I provide training and you co-Captain before doing yourself so you can see how we do it.

4 January Events!

Thursday, December 27, 2018
JANUARY EVENTS:

Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Sat. Jan. 5th, 9AM-2PM, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping at the Central Denver ReStore on Rio Grande. We've helped them many times previously.  We normally are helping to stock donations onto the shelves, straighten up or rearrange some of the areas, and sometimes help with accepting incoming donations.  They have a new change in policy- ReStore volunteers will receive a 10% discount off of any purchases they wish to make on the day that they volunteer!  There is free parking and a lunch break.  Customers shop at the ReStore for new and gently used appliances, furniture, home remodeling supplies, pictures, and more at huge discounts.  All profits support Habitat for Humanity's home ownership program for low-income families.

Food Bank of the Rockies, Sat. Jan. 12th, 8:45AM-Noon, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping at their Main Warehouse in Aurora. Food and other items are processed from food drives and grocery rescue pickups. Volunteers help inspect, clean, sort and box these items before they are distributed to clients. This area requires an attention to detail and is a lowimpact/physical area, though it does require standing for the shift. The Food Bank of the Rockies helps families thrive by procuring and distributing food and essentials to the hungry. They are a fantastic organization.  Unfortunately, we haven't assisted them in years so this will be a great opportunity to start working with them again.

Serving Dinner at The Crossing homeless shelter, Thurs. Jan. 17th, 4:45-7:15PM, 6 volunteers are needed. Many of our volunteers request this event because they enjoy it and feel that it is such a worthwhile organization.  The Crossing is a transitional facility between the homeless shelter and getting back into an apartment.  The residents are working and saving up for an apartment.  It is drug & alcohol free.  Men, women & families reside there.  It provides a great service as people work to get back on their feet. Our volunteers will help in the buffet line and may help with some of the meal bags for those who come back from work after dinner time.  After we serve dinner we will have an opportunity to eat as a group and also enjoy the meal.  We then do a few minutes of clean up and straightening in the dining room.

2019 SVGD Annual Meeting, Tues. Jan. 29th, 6-8PM, All SVGD members are welcome!  At our Annual Meeting we will review the year of 2018 for our organization, we will elect our 2019 Board members, and we will have a group discussion about our plans for upcoming year.  Everyone is welcome.  We will be serving dinner so do need you to register for the meeting no later than Thurs. the 24th so we can put in the food order.  The meeting will be centrally located in the Cherry Creek area with free parking available.  Once you sign up you will receive all the details.  This is a great time to get to know some of the other members.  Please join us and help to make our plans to make a difference in the Denver Metro area!

DECEMBER  EVENT:

Holiday Party for Bayaud Enterprises, Sat., Dec. 1st, 11:30AM-3:30PM. 6 Volunteers are needed. We will once again be assisting Bayaud Enterprises at their Holiday Party.  We will be helping to organize the gifts by the children's ages, will be helping to get the gifts from the gift room to Santa at the appropriate times, help as elves for Santa in passing out the gifts, and may even help a little with their buffet food line for the attendees.  This is a fun-filled afternoon with lots of thankful guests!  Bayaud Enterprises mission is to create Hope, Opportunity and Choice, with work as the means through which people with disabilities and other barriers to employment can more fully participate in the mainstream of life.  They do a great job at helping people become self sufficient.  At the Holiday party the families of these people also can come for a lot of fun.  There is a free food buffet for them, Santa Claus, gifts for the children, and usually a well-known speaker coordinating the event.  Everyone is so festive and happy!  It will be a good time to get into the Holiday spirit and to do something to help our community.  The event is held in Northwest Denver.
