SVGD- Upcoming Volunteer Events

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

We have so many events from which you can choose right now.  We can still use a couple volunteers for this weekend's Youth Expo and Nibbles & Sips events if you are available! Since these are coming up so soon please sign up quickly if you are able to help out.  The forecasts say the snow should be gone by then!

Also, the Vintage Vegas Casino Night can still use four more people. This event even features an appearance by Denver's Mayor!

We have been asked by Rocky Mountain PBS (Channel 6)  to assist at one of their major phone fundraising evenings.  SVGD will be sponsoring the evening and will be mentioned on air.  We need a large group of volunteers for this fun opportunity.

Thanks to all of you for all you are doing to make our volunteer events successful for the non profits. We have had some great groups of SVGD volunteers assisting!

I look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming events!

SVGD New February Events

Sunday, January 13, 2013

I'm excited to announce that SVGD & Metro Volunteers have agreed to cooperate on some volunteer efforts.  Metro Volunteers will be featuring SVGD as their Non Profit Organization of the Month for the month of February and will be promoting our February 9th event to their volunteers.  I am hopeful that this reciprocal arrangement will help both organizations to grow and to be even more helpful to the non profit organizations we serve.
I have two new events to announce in this newsletter.  First, there is an opportunity to celebrate at a Super Bowl Party which provides funds to local charities (I know, most of us are depressed about the Broncos this weekend but the Super Bowl will still be a fun event).  Second, we will be having several volunteers at the Shaken Not Stirred Martini Party which benefits Boys Hope Girls Hope.  I hope to see you at both of these great events!
Also, please don't forget about our upcoming Annual Meeting on February 7th.  Your online voting ballot will be available soon if you are not able to attend.  We still need one volunteer for the Dinner at the Crossing if you are available on February 1st.  We are going into a hectic season of events so I hope you put some time on your calendar for volunteering!  All of the opportunities I've mentioned have details below.

SVGD ER Event this Weekend + 2 New Events

Thursday, December 20, 2012

 SVGD Volunteers:

I received a frantic call from Samaritan House today.  They just received several large black plastic bags filled with wrapped gifts.  The problem is that they have no way of knowing what is inside the wrapped package- is it for a woman, man, girl, boy, baby???  With the Holiday gift giving events next week they are in a bind and really need us.  They are hoping a few of our SVGD volunteers can come in on Sunday from 9AM til Noon to help unwrap & organize the gifts.  I know we are all busy!  I'm hoping some of us will be able to help.  Details are below.
The Friday night gift wrapping event is filled (ironically we are doing the opposite of what we'll be doing on Sunday).  There are two other new events in this issue, one for the Read Aloud program at the Denver Public Library where we will be packing backpacks for their early literacy program and another for Habitat for Humanity. Also, please don't forget that our Annual Meeting will be coming up shortly.  To sign up for any of the events below please go to the www.svgd.org web site.

NEW EVENTS:

1.     Last-Minute Holiday Assistance at Samaritan House- Sun. Dec. 23, 9AM til Noon.  Samaritan House just received several large black plastic bags filled with wrapped presents.  The problem is that they have no way of knowing what the gifts are inside and whether they are for children or adults.  This is a very hectic time of year for all of us, I know!  They've asked if there is any way a group of our volunteers can help by unwrapping the presents and helping them to organize it.  We've only found out about this three days prior to their need!  Hopefully, there are a few of us who can assist!

2.   Habitat for Humanity Outlet Store, Sat. Jan. 5th, 9AM-2PM, 6 volunteers are needed to assist at the Habitat for Humanity store in Wheat RidgeWe have assisted at their outlet stores previously and always enjoy the experience.  Volunteers will help by putting items out on the store floor, helping to arrange items on the floor, helping customers to put items into their vehicles etc.  These stores contain everything from furniture to building items at a discount.  The funds go to assist the wonderful Habitat for Humanity program.  Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes and bring a sack lunch.

3.  Packing Backpacks for the Read Aloud Program benefiting the Denver Public Library, Tues. Jan. 8th, 5:30-7:30PM- if you can possibly make it earlier the Event Captain will be there at 4PM & they could use you then, 6-8 volunteers are needed to help pack backpacks with childrens books to be used with the Read Aloud program.  The Read Aloud program is an early literacy program for children.  This should be a fun experience in the Central Denver area.  Volunteers may wish to get together socially as a group at a nearby location following the evevent.

SVGD Annual Meeting & Need Board Members

Saturday, December 08, 2012

From SVGD Board Chair Tom Baroch:

As we come to the end of another great year for SVGD, I want to encourage you all to continue to sign up for events and keep doing the wonderful work we’ve been doing for several years. There are a few items to note as we end the 2012 year.

We have a brand new website!! We’ve been talking about it for a couple of years and it is currently up, running and going through some final adjustments at this time. It took the closing of our previous web host to spark the absolute need to upgrade and provide our members with a new site, but it got done. I thank everyone involved, especially Jimmy Wu, who went through this sometimes (often?) frustrating and tedious process. Please bear with us as we continue to learn the full range of options the new site offers us.

It is time to schedule an Annual Meeting for SVGD. We did not have one in January 2012 due to significant scheduling and other issues, so we are scheduling the annual meeting for Thursday, January 10, 2013 in the evening. There are a couple of places we are working with to schedule a meeting. We will give you all the location as soon as we finalize the space. Stay tuned.

Along with filling members in on what SVGD has been up to and where we might like to go in the future is an election of a new Board of Directors for SVGD. The current BOD has been involved for a while now and we would like to find some new people for the Board to offer fresh ideas and leadership on the Board. I will be resigning, but will stay and offer support and assistance to the Board and the new Board Chair whoever that might be.

If you are interested in becoming a board member, staying a board member or coming back, having been a board member, please let me know by December 15. We will have an online vote for board members as well as a vote during the meeting. If you do not respond by that date, you can still be nominated and voted on in the meeting, but will not be included in the online voting. To become a board member or find out more information, please contact me at: tbar1@rocketmail.com with SVGD BOD in the subject line.

*Note that while general SVGD members have to be single (ie., not married or in a serious committed relationship) Board members do not have to be single… and we welcome board members with talent in marketing, legal issues, accounting and finance, business management, event  planning and management, membership/volunteer management, recruiting and retention, etc. Any buiness or organizational talent is welcomed as are people who have not been board members previously.

This has been a good year for SVGD, let’s make 2013 a better one and keep SVGD’s reputation as being the Denver Metro areas premier volunteer organization, helping the nonprofit community manage their fundraising and other organizational events!!

Best,

Tom Baroch

SVGD Board President (Retiring)

SVGD December Volunteer Needs

Tuesday, December 04, 2012

SVGD Volunteers:

Thank you for coming through by assisting with last weekend's Blossoms of Light at the Denver Botanic Gardens.  Many of you responded to my request for needed volunteers and we did fill the event!

It must be a sign of the busy Holiday Season as we now find that we are short 4 volunteers to help the families with disabilities at their Holiday Party this Saturday evening.  We have always found this to be a very worthwhile experience.  Details are below.  Please sign up soon!  Saturday is only a few days away!  Thank you!

Also, please watch our web site for an upcoming event for Samaritan House.  Every year we assist them by wrapping presents for the children who will be spending Christmas at the homeless shelter.  We always love this event.  They are still determining which day they need us but I think I'll know by the end of the week.

2. Holiday Party for Bayaud Enterprises, Sat. Dec. 8, 5-9 PM.  We STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS!
