SVGD NEWSLETTER
August 14, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
We have been filling our events & having a great time!  Thanks to everyone who helped at the School Supply Distribution last weekend.  Those Jefferson County students are starting school today & I know how thankful they & their families were when we helped them!
We have two fantastic events coming up yet this month.  They are both with Habitat for Humanity- one being a Thank You party with live music as they are so thankful for the help we've provided them in the past years.
Details for the two new events are given below.  Please sign up if you'd like to help at the Denver ReStore and/or attend the Blues N' BBQ Thank You party in the foothills. I hope to see you soon!

AUGUST EVENTS:

Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Sat. Aug. 24th, 10AM-2PM, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping at the Central Denver ReStore on Rio Grande. We've helped them many times previously.  We normally are helping to stock donations onto the shelves, straighten up or rearrange some of the areas, and sometimes help with accepting incoming donations.  They have a new change in policy- ReStore volunteers will receive a 10% discount off of any purchases they wish to make on the day that they volunteer.  There is free parking and a lunch break.  Customers shop at the ReStore for new and gently used appliances, furniture, home remodeling supplies, pictures, and more at huge discounts.  All profits support Habitat for Humanity's home ownership program for low-income families.

Blues N' BBQ Thank You Party- Habitat for Humanity, Sat.,Aug. 31st 4-8PM. All members are welcome but please sign up so we have a number. On July 20th we assisted Habitat for Humanity at their Blues N' BBQ event.  Unfortunately the event was rained out 20 minutes before our shift ended and the last two bands were going to play weren't able to do so just when we were planning on enjoying the event.  Habitat for Humanity is throwing a Thank You party where The Duke Street Kings and My Blue Sky, who never got to play due to the rain, are going to play to finish the show and they've invited all of our members (even if you didn't help at the event) to attend! They have told me how very thankful they are for all the support SVGD has provided to Habitat for Humanity through the years.  They are going to also present the check to Habitat for Humanity.  They raised a record-breaking $50,000 this year for Habitat for Humanity so they are extremely thankful for everyone who helped!  The event is going to be held at a Brewing Company in Evergreen.  Please sign up if you'd like to come so we have a number for them & then we'll get you the exact location.  This should be a fun way to start the Labor Day weekend and a great opportunity to get to the foothills just West of Denver.  We'll be glad to set up a car pool if you'd like to attend.  Come have a great time while supporting this worthwhile organization!!

Please sign up for any of these events on the www.svgd.org  web site.

FUTURE EVENTS:
The following events are going to be upcoming but I don't have either the Event Captains or all the details yet.  Some of our members do like to get their schedule planned as soon as possible so I'm listing these so you can "pencil them" in to your schedule.  I will let you know when I have all the information & have put them on the web site so you can "officially" register.

Sat., Sept. 14, MuckFest benefiting the National MS Foundation, 11:30AM-4PM. The event will be in Parker.  It's a muddy obstacle course. We assist but don't run the course (still may get a little muddy!)  What fun while helping a good cause!
Sat., Sept. 21  Food Bank of the Rockies, 8:45AM-Noon.  This in NE Aurora.  We will be putting food boxes together for low-income families.

If you know of any non-profit organizations that can use a group of 6 or more volunteers during an upcoming evening or weekend please feel free to give me the information as I'll be glad to explore the possibility of organizing a group of our SVGD volunteers to assist!  Thank you!

Upcoming August Volunteer Events!

SVGD Volunteers:
I have just put another new event on our SVGD web site.  We will be serving dinner at the Denver Rescue Mission on Monday, August 12th.  Also we have a School Supply Distribution event coming up on Saturday, August 10th.  I hope you are able to help at one or both of these events.  Both provide such a great service to our community!  Thanks for your help!

AUGUST EVENTS:

School Supply Distribution for the Jeffco Action Center, Sat. Aug 10th, 9AM-12:45PM, (We still need 4 volunteers for this event.) 6 Volunteers in total will be helping. We will be helping to staff the school supply distribution. Approximately 5000 students in Jefferson County will be assisted.  Last year one of the students wrote that it "made me feel like I was not different from anyone."  Did you know?...  In 2018, Colorado had the 3rd highest rate of family homelessness in the nation and the Jefferson County School District has the highest number of identified homeless students in Colorado.  We will be helping the Action Center to make a big difference in our Metro community.  The event will be held at an elementary school in Wheat Ridge.

Serving Dinner at the Denver Rescue Mission, Mon. Aug. 12th 4:45-7:30PM, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be serving dinner to the homeless in their Downtown facility.  They do have free parking for the volunteers.  For some of the guests, the meals they serve at the Mission are the only source of nutrition they receive.  They say that "with each healthy meal comes strength to face the new challenges of each day."  They serve over 600,000 meals to the hungry each year.  We have helped them before.  The volunteers truly find this to be a worthwhile experience

SVGD NEWSLETTER
June 12, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I just put our Cherry Creek Arts Festival event on the web site so that you can sign up.  This is another one where you can bring friends and associates.  Just let me know the names of who you wish to bring so I can put them on the registration list.  We have a fantastic location again where we should be able to hear the bands!  There's nothing like dancing a little while you sell Pepsi!  Plus it's a great event to view before or after your shift.
We do still need a few volunteers for this weekend's fun PrideFest booth.  We need 3 people for the Saturday afternoon shift, 1 person for the Sunday morning shift, and 2 people for the Sunday afternoon shift.  We're getting really close but we do need to honor our commitment as to number of volunteers in order for it to also be a fundraiser for us.  Please sign up very soon if you can help since the event is only a couple days away!  Thank you for your help!
I will be adding more events to our Future Events list soon.  Most of my time right now is taken up with getting ready for this weekend's big event.

This is the first of two fundraising events that SVGD is doing this year. In addition to helping the non-profit we will get paid money towards our fantastic organization so we can continue to operate.  SVGD needs funds annually in order to pay our insurance, web hosting etc.  We provide volunteers to approx. 60 non-profit events annually but do need to do a couple for us in order to continue providing this great service to the Metro Denver community.  We will be in charge of an alcohol booth at this fun event with a percentage of the profits going to our organization!  Since this is a big undertaking & a fundraiser, non-SVGD members can also register.  We encourage our members to invite friends, work associates, and other non-profit associates to participate.  When you sign up please let us know if you have other persons who could be volunteers and we will contact them or you can give us their info.  We helped at this event the past two years and had such a fantastic time!  It's a colorful event with lots going on!  What fun!!  Recognized as one of the top ten pride events in the country, Denver's PrideFest is a celebration of community, heritage, family and culture. Produced by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Colorado (The Center), more than 600,000 people from Colorado, surrounding areas, & internationally this year come out to enjoy the parade, rally, music, entertainment, food and much more.  Please join us as we accomplish two objectives- supporting SVGD financially and supporting this non profit.  The Sunday parade will end at Civic Center Park where the event is located.

NEW JULY EVENT!

Cherry Creek Arts Festival- Shift 6 , Fri, Sat. & Sun. July 5th-7th, 3 Volunteers are needed for each of the 6 shifts.  We will be running a Pepsi booth again this year!   This is the other fundraising booth that we do annually.  So many non profits want to have a booth and the competition is steep.  We've done a booth for several years and they keep asking us back as our volunteers do a great job.  There is free parking for the volunteers.   CherryArts is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide access to art experiences and support arts education in Colorado.  The Cherry Creek Arts Festival (CCAF) weekend event is a world-class and award-winning celebration of the visual, culinary and performing arts and enjoys an attendance of 350,000 visitors over the course of the three-day event.  They also have an art education experience.  The event is North of the Cherry Creek Mall.  Plan on coming to help plus to enjoy this fantastic event!!
Here are the shift times:  Fri., July 5th- Shift 1- 9:30AM-3PM, Shift 2 3-8:30PM;  Sat., July 6th- Shift 3- 9:30AM-3PM, Shift 4 3-8:30PM; Sun., July 7th- Shift 5 9:30AM-2PM, Shift 6 2-6:30PM

SVGD NEWSLETTER
June 3, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I just added a new event to our Future events.  We will be assisting with a School Supply Distribution to low-income students at a Wheat Ridge elementary school.  Our future events aren't on the web site yet but please check the section below if you'd like to pencil them on your calendar.  I'll let you know when they are on the web site for registrations.
We still need 1 volunteer this upcoming Sunday for the City Park Band series!  It should be a lot of fun.  They do provide free parking for our volunteers so please sign up soon if you'd like to attend so we can be sure to get you a parking pass.  They were hoping to have all the names very soon.
The Countdown is on for our PrideFest Shifts!  The event is the weekend after next so is a top priority for us right now.  We have to provide the number of volunteers to which we've committed in order to get paid as a fundraiser.  This is our biggest fundraiser each year.  I have noted below the number of openings we currently have on each shift.  Please sign up for the shift that works best for you and please tell your friends, family, business associates also & let us know their names and shift preference as we do need to get people outside of our organization in order to fill our commitment.  This is our 3rd year doing the booth.  Doug Steebner, our Board President, & I attended the Beverage Booth Manager training class two days ago as one of us needs to be at the booth at each shift.  We found out that there is a National event coming up two weeks later and that many people are coming from out of the country to attend our Denver Pride Fest this year.  They are expecting 600-650,000 people this year!  Wow!  This should be a fantastic time!  Also, they are going to be providing box lunches for each shift so you'll be able to go to the nearby Volunteer Center when you take a break to eat and won't have to stand in line & pay for a meal.  Please sign up as soon as possible.  Thanks so much for supporting our organization!

SVGD Volunteers:
I just added the Chalk Arts Festival benefiting the Larimer Square Arts Assn., which will be on Saturday next week, to our SVGD web site so you can now volunteer!  The art work there is fantastic & I'm sure you will enjoy the experience!
We still need volunteers for next Wednesday evening's Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for Warren Village.  There was some confusion on the date since the number & the day didn't match in the last newsletter.  It is definitely next Wednesday evening and we do need some volunteers!  I know that Memorial Day is coming up but  please sign up now if you can since it's only a couple days after Memorial Day.
Also, we are just starting to register for our shifts at PrideFest and need 44 volunteers in total.  Please feel free to let your friends, family, business associates etc. know about this event that supports SVGD and let us know if you've got people who can help.
We've got a fun Spring/Summer coming up!  Details for all the events are given below.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

MAY EVENTS:

Flower on Every Grave benefiting Victory for Veterans, Memorial Day, Mon. May 27, approx. 8:30-10:30AM,(This event is now on Waiting List status. If you sign up you will receive an automated response acknowledging your registration but will only be contacted if we get a volunteer cancellation.)  7 Volunteers in total will be assisting. We will be helping them place a flower on  every grave at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.  This organization serves veterans & their families needs, one at a time.  Their Vision is Absolute Zero!- zero suicides, zero homeless, zero jobless, zero uncared for, & zero feeling alone & abandoned.  The Memorial Day event is part of a larger mission which also includes putting flowers on the graves in Arlington National Cemetery, organized by the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation.  We helped them last year, really enjoyed the event & the spirit of Memorial Day with enough time to move forward and have a great Holiday for ourselves!

Warren Village Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, Wed., May 29th, The event is from 6:30-8:30PM. 6 Volunteers are needed (It will be 2 shifts of 3 as they wish us to enjoy the event so 3 people will be enjoying the event while 3 people volunteer and then they will rotate). They will be providing complementary food, drinks, entertainment, and awards to this past year's volunteers at the Mercury Cafe Downtown (there is a parking lot available in the back.)  This should be a very fun & gala event!  Warren Village's goal is to help low-income, single-parent families make the journey from poverty to self-sufficiency.  We have helped them in the past with a fashion show, painted their school for the young children, helped decorate their main building for Holidays and have helped at galas.  They are a fantastic and very worthwhile organization.

JUNE EVENTS:

Chalk Art Festival benefiting the Larimer Arts Association, Sat. June 19:30AM-2PM, 6 Volunteers are needed.  We will be staffing a beverage booth selling beer, wine, cocktails & non-alcoholic beverages.  This Larimer Square event is one of Denver's premier downtown art events.  The artists actually draw on the street.  By Saturday afternoon they will be well on their way with their beautiful drawings so you'll have an opportunity to see some great art.  All volunteers will receive a Tshirt & a meal.  The event is easily accessible by Light Rail & the 16th Mall shuttle (they aren't able to offer parking.)  The Larimer Arts Association is dedicated to promoting arts awareness and education in Denver.

NEED EVENT CAPTAINS:
Right now I am short on Event Captains due to several people now having health, work, or other personal issues.  I can't lead all the events myself so really depend on having Event Captains so we can offer several events each month.  As an Event Captain you do not have to plan the event. You confirm the attendance for the volunteers who have registered and give them the event information. Then you attend the event to check in the group and make sure everyone knows what to do. I provide a training sheet & information on the event to you.  I could really use a few new Event Captains!  You get to pick the events that you wish to lead.  Please let me know if you would like to help.  It's a fun position!!

SVGD NEWSLETTER
May 17, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I've just put some new events on our SVGD web site.  We will be helping, plus also enjoying, the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for Warren Village the end of this month.  It should be a great time!  Also, we are going into our June & July SVGD Fundraising Season (the two months that we have two events that help keep SVGD operational, i.e. we need to set up a new web site since our carrier is discontinuing, we have to have Board insurance, plus other operational expenses.)  For that reason, I've put our 4 shifts running the alcohol booth at PrideFest on the web site.  Since this event supports SVGD you can also register friends, work associates, & non-profit people you know who would like to support our organization.  The PrideFest event takes a total of 44 volunteers over the 2-day period so we really count on our SVGD members to help find people who will support us. That is why I have to put this on the web site a month in advance!  The Memorial Day Flower on Every Grave event is now on Waiting List status.  Please see details for all of these events below.  Also, please notice in the "future events" category that we will be assisting at the Blues & BBQ event again to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity.  See you soon at one of these events for a great time while helping some good causes!!

May 9, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I just put a new event on the SVGD web site!  We will be helping the Victory for Veterans organization again with their Memorial Day project of putting a flower on every grave at Ft. Logan Cemetery!  This is an AM event so you will still have plenty of time to celebrate Memorial Day with your family and/or friends.
I know the weather has been looking gloomy but it's supposed to be nice by Saturday again!  We had a volunteer addition and then a volunteer cancellation sowe're still short 3 volunteers for this Saturday's Spring Plant Sale at the Denver Botanic Gardens!  Please sign up soon if you can help.  Thank you!
Details for both of these events are given below.

MAY EVENTS:
Spring Plant Sale benefiting Denver Botanic Gardens, Sat. May 11th, 7:15AM- 12:30PM, (We can still use 3 volunteers for this event.) 6 Volunteers in total will be helping. We will be helping as cashier's assistants who help the customers with their carts containing the plants they wish to purchase. This is one of the Botanic Gardens biggest events.  They will provide both breakfast & lunch as well as snacks, coffee, and beverages.  Also all volunteers will get 10% off any plants they wish to purchase as the event does continue on after our shift ends as well as a 10% discount at their Cafe if you'd like to make a purchase there! We have done this event previously and the volunteers really liked it.  This should be a fun experience!

Flower on Every Grave benefiting Victory for Veterans, Memorial Day, Mon. May 27, approx. 8:30-10:30AM, 6 Volunteers are needed.

April 29, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
We just had a fantastic weekend with two events!  We helped Cafe 180 that provides meals for people who can't afford to pay for their meals on Saturday & ran the Cherry Creek Sneak Beer Garden on Sunday helping to provide funds so that good food doesn't go into the dumpsters & landfills but, rather, goes to people who need the food!  Thank you to all of you who volunteered at the events!
I've just put another event on our SVGD web site so there are now two May events (the first this upcoming weekend) for which you can register.  We will be helping at the registration area for the MS Walk in City Park this upcoming Saturday and will be helping at The Denver Botanic Gardens Spring Plant Sale the following Saturday.  Please sign up soon if you can help at either of these events.  The weather is supposed to be great this Saturday so we should have a fantastic time while helping a good cause!  I know that MS has touched many of our lives and many of us know family and/or friends who have been impacted by this illness.
Details for both of these events are given below.  I hope to see you there as we continue to give back to our community!

SVGD NEWSLETTER
April 23, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
I just put another event on our SVGD web site for which you can now register!  We will be helping the MS Walk on Saturday, May 4that their Registration Tent!  This is a new event for us and is for a very worthwhile cause.  I hope to see you there!
Meanwhile, we can still use some volunteers for this weekend!  We can use 1 more volunteer at Cafe 180 on Saturday and 4 more people at the Cherry Creek Sneak beer booth on Sunday! The runners & walkers at the Cherry Creek Sneak all get a free coupon for a beer after they finish.  They are a great group & we'll be busy as we become a very popular booth after the races.  It is such a fun event with so many activities happening!  We'll be very short-handed without the 4 additional volunteers so please sign up soon if you can help!  Thank you!

 APRIL EVENTS:

Cafe 180 benefiting those who can't pay for their meals, Sat.,April 27th 12:30-3PM, (We can still use 1 volunteer on Saturday) 5 total Volunteers will be assisting to serve customers, help prepare food, yes, even help clean up!  Cafe 180's mission is to reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.  Not only do they serve up delicious food, they serve up respect, dignity & self sufficiency.  We helped them a few times and really enjoyed the experience.  Plus we each had a great meal when we completed our shift!  They say:  "we've all relied on the kindness of others at certain times in our lives... For those who have enough, it's a chance to eat well and do well. For those who are struggling, it's a chance to eat in a dignified manner.  We're not about hand outs.  We're about giving people a hand up..."  Volunteers need to wear comfortable shoes & anyone with long hair needs to have it pulled back.  The group will have cafe' shirts to wear when they get there. The location for the event is near Hampden/Broadway.   What a great opportunity!

Cherry Creek Sneak, Sun.April 28th, 8:30AM-Noon. (WE STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SUNDAY!!) 6 total Volunteers will be assisting. We will be beer pourers for this event. Many of our patrons will be the runners in the event who receive a beer certificate.  This event is  such a well-known Denver tradition.  The race is on 1st Avenue, in the Cherry Creek area.  They also have a great after party with a costume contest, music, vendors, etc.  Since we will be "beer pourers" we won't have to be there super early like the volunteers for the registration etc. (6AM for them!)  The Cherry Creek Sneak offers run/walk courses for all levels.  They partner with the We Don't Waste non profit so that food goes to those who need it rather than landfills.  The Sneak’s after-race festivities have turned into Denver’s biggest block party—post-race fun draws nearly 20,000 racers, friends, and family for music, cool vendors, a costume contest,  and a Kids’ Fun Zone sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Proceeds benefit Food Bank of the Rockies, a non-profit organization providing food and supplies to more than 1000 hunger-relief programs in Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
