SVGD NEWSLETTER
February 26, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
We still need 3 people to help this Sunday morning at the Fight For Air Climb benefiting the American Lung Assn.  We will be in charge of the registration table.  The event is inside and there is free parking.  Please sign up soon if you can help as they really need 6 people at the registration table & I don't want to let them down.
I just put the "Beautiful Junk Sale" event on the web site so you can now sign up for that.  It will be on Sat. March 16th.  This is a unique and fun event!
I could use a few more SVGD Event Captains if you are interested.  I provide training and you co-Captain before doing it yourself so you can see how we do it.  I still find and confirm the event.  The Event Captain's job isn't hard, is a lot of fun, but I do need people to lead some of the events as I can't lead them all myself.  Please email me if you're interested in getting more information.  I email out a list of upcoming events to the Event Captains and they select ones they would like to lead that meet their schedules.
Thanks to all of you for helping our Denver Metro Community at these upcoming events!

The Action Center’s mission is to provide an immediate response to basic human needs and promote pathways to self-sufficiency for Jefferson County residents and the homeless.  We help them with their Clothing & Food donations as well as their Thanksgiving food donations to needy families.  This is such a worthy non profit!!

SVGD Volunteers:

I have just put two new events on our web site for the month of February for which you can now register.  We will be helping KUVO Public Radio Station at their phone bank and will be helping the Jeffco Action Center with their Clothing Donation Sorting.  Please see the details below.
Also, I have added after our events, some of the future events that I am working on so you have an idea and can put them into your schedule (as suggested by one of our members at last night's meeting).  There will be more events to come for all the upcoming months but these are the ones I'm working on right now.

4 January Events!

Thursday, December 27, 2018
JANUARY EVENTS:

Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Sat. Jan. 5th, 9AM-2PM, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping at the Central Denver ReStore on Rio Grande. We've helped them many times previously.  We normally are helping to stock donations onto the shelves, straighten up or rearrange some of the areas, and sometimes help with accepting incoming donations.  They have a new change in policy- ReStore volunteers will receive a 10% discount off of any purchases they wish to make on the day that they volunteer!  There is free parking and a lunch break.  Customers shop at the ReStore for new and gently used appliances, furniture, home remodeling supplies, pictures, and more at huge discounts.  All profits support Habitat for Humanity's home ownership program for low-income families.

Food Bank of the Rockies, Sat. Jan. 12th, 8:45AM-Noon, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping at their Main Warehouse in Aurora. Food and other items are processed from food drives and grocery rescue pickups. Volunteers help inspect, clean, sort and box these items before they are distributed to clients. This area requires an attention to detail and is a lowimpact/physical area, though it does require standing for the shift. The Food Bank of the Rockies helps families thrive by procuring and distributing food and essentials to the hungry. They are a fantastic organization.  Unfortunately, we haven't assisted them in years so this will be a great opportunity to start working with them again.

Serving Dinner at The Crossing homeless shelter, Thurs. Jan. 17th, 4:45-7:15PM, 6 volunteers are needed. Many of our volunteers request this event because they enjoy it and feel that it is such a worthwhile organization.  The Crossing is a transitional facility between the homeless shelter and getting back into an apartment.  The residents are working and saving up for an apartment.  It is drug & alcohol free.  Men, women & families reside there.  It provides a great service as people work to get back on their feet. Our volunteers will help in the buffet line and may help with some of the meal bags for those who come back from work after dinner time.  After we serve dinner we will have an opportunity to eat as a group and also enjoy the meal.  We then do a few minutes of clean up and straightening in the dining room.

2019 SVGD Annual Meeting, Tues. Jan. 29th, 6-8PM, All SVGD members are welcome!  At our Annual Meeting we will review the year of 2018 for our organization, we will elect our 2019 Board members, and we will have a group discussion about our plans for upcoming year.  Everyone is welcome.  We will be serving dinner so do need you to register for the meeting no later than Thurs. the 24th so we can put in the food order.  The meeting will be centrally located in the Cherry Creek area with free parking available.  Once you sign up you will receive all the details.  This is a great time to get to know some of the other members.  Please join us and help to make our plans to make a difference in the Denver Metro area!

New December Volunteer Event Next Saturday!

Saturday, November 24, 2018
SVGD Volunteers:
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!!  We had a very nice group at our SVGD Thanksgiving!  Thank you to Sandra Dow for hosting the event at her home!
I just put a new event on our SVGD web site.  We will be helping at the Holiday Party for Bayaud Enterprises which is for the families of the handicapped persons they assist.  There is a large group of very thankful attendees who will definitely put you in the Holiday Spirit!  We really get involved with the gift-giving etc.  It is next Saturday so sign up soon!  All the details are given below.
Also, I have two other December events scheduled but not yet on our web site as I'm looking for the Event Captains.  I'll let you know when I have them on the web so you can register but thought you might want to pencil them in on your busy schedule.  We will be helping the Botanic Gardens at their Blossoms of Light the evening of Wed., Dec. 12th & will be wrapping gifts for the homeless children at Samaritan House the evening of Thurs., Dec. 20th.  I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!

DECEMBER  EVENT:

Holiday Party for Bayaud Enterprises, Sat., Dec. 1st, 11:30AM-3:30PM. 6 Volunteers are needed. We will once again be assisting Bayaud Enterprises at their Holiday Party.  We will be helping to organize the gifts by the children's ages, will be helping to get the gifts from the gift room to Santa at the appropriate times, help as elves for Santa in passing out the gifts, and may even help a little with their buffet food line for the attendees.  This is a fun-filled afternoon with lots of thankful guests!  Bayaud Enterprises mission is to create Hope, Opportunity and Choice, with work as the means through which people with disabilities and other barriers to employment can more fully participate in the mainstream of life.  They do a great job at helping people become self sufficient.  At the Holiday party the families of these people also can come for a lot of fun.  There is a free food buffet for them, Santa Claus, gifts for the children, and usually a well-known speaker coordinating the event.  Everyone is so festive and happy!  It will be a good time to get into the Holiday spirit and to do something to help our community.  The event is held in Northwest Denver.

Need Denim & Diamonds Gala Volunteers + New Event!

Monday, November 05, 2018
SVGD Volunteers:
Fall weather is here and I'm sure we are all starting to think about Thanksgiving!  I have 4 great events on the SVGD web site to help put you in the Thanksgiving spirit where you can make a difference in our community.  I just put the Thanksgiving Food Distribution event on the web site so you can now sign up to help.
Also, WE STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS TO HELP THIS SATURDAY AT THE DENIM & DIAMONDS GALA helping the single mothers & children so that they are not homeless.  Please sign up soon if you can help at this event.
We will be having some fun at the Yappy Hour for the Dumb Friends League where you can even bring your well-mannered dog & have a photo taken if you'd like.  I'll be there but I don't think my two cats would enjoy the experience!  Also, please join us at the SVGD Thanksgiving Dinner!  Details for all four of these November events are given below.

NOVEMBER  EVENTS:

Denim & Diamonds Gala benefiting the Bridges of Hope, Sat. Nov. 10th, 4:30-8:30PM, (WE STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SATURDAY!) 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping with check-in, registration, and a little with the live & silent auction.  Volunteers will be provided with a plated dinner (just like the $100-$850 guests) and will have a break.  Bridges of Hope partners with single mothers and their children to provide rental assistance to prevent homelessness.  The event is being held in Lakewood at an Event Center that many use for weddings & special events.  It resembles a European Vineyard with rock arches.  We will be inside with a great view of a small lake!  Cocktail attire is fine but with the "Denim & Diamonds" theme it is fine to wear jeans and a fancy shirt.  They will be having cocktails and live music also.  Our volunteers are invited to stay to dance and enjoy the event which ends around 11:30PM.

Thanksgiving Food Distribution for the Jeffco Action Center, Sunday, November 18th, 8-10:30AM. 6 Volunteers are needed.  We will once again be helping the low-income families in Jefferson County so that they are able to have a Thanksgiving Dinner for their family.  The event is actually at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving.  Low income families will receive a voucher prior to the event.  This event will help approx. 5200 families!!  We will collect the vouchers and then hand out boxes that contain the fixings for them to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner for their household.  The families will also receive a certificate for a turkey or ham at their local grocery store.  We have helped at this event before.  It is such a good feeling to help the families that would not be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner at their homes.  They are so very grateful for the assistance!  Before you have your Thanksgiving, please help those who are hoping to have one.

Yappy Hour benefiting the Denver Dumb Friends League, Sat., Nov. 17th, 2-4PM, Everyone is welcome but we do need to register how many are coming prior to the event.  Please sign up by Monday, November 12th so we can let them know how many are coming.  Join us at a brewery near Broadway/Hampden for their "Paws to be Thankful!" Yappy Hour.  Start a new tradition with family and friends, and give thanks for our furry friends.  This is a dog friendly event (must be leashed, well behaved & kept in hand) and raise a pint for homeless pets. You are welcome to invite friends just let us know how many. A portion of the beer sales benefit the homeless pets at the Dumb Friends League.  You can also get a photo with you and your pup by Denver's A-List Top Dog Photographer, Sean McNeil for a $25 donation or purchase a collectible glass while supplies last if you like.  You do not have to bring a dog to the event though!  Every once in awhile we do a social event that benefits a good cause.  Our Going Out for a Good Cause Meetup group is being invited as well as volunteers from many organizations & companies.  I hope to see you there for some pre-Thanksgiving fun!

SVGD Thanksgiving Dinner, Thurs., Nov. 22, 1:30PM-approx. 5:30PM, We will be having a Thanksgiving Dinner again for our members at one of our member's homes in Centennial.  We've  done this several times and it has always been well attended.  We have several members who are not able to go to be with their families on Thanksgiving (or at least don't have afternoon plans) & enjoy having a place to go and meet some great people.  SVGD will provide the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy.  Each of the attendees will be bringing a potluck dish to pass such as an appetizer, salad, bread, vegetable, or dessert.  After you sign up I will contact you to figure out what you'd like to bring.  We try to coordinate so that we do have a variety and plenty to eat.  Attendees also will bring whatever they wish to drink (we, of course, will have water.)  You are responsible to drink responsibly.  If you'd like to share Thanksgiving with us we'd love to have you!  We all have so very much for which to be Thankful!!

Denver Rescue Mission & SVGD Thanksgiving Dinner!

Sunday, October 21, 2018
SVGD Volunteers:
What beautiful Fall weather we are having!  I hope you're having a great weekend!  I just put our SVGD Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner on the web site so you can sign up to attend.  Please see the details below.
Also, we can still use one more volunteer to help serve lunch next Saturday at the Denver Rescue Mission.  Please sign up soon if you'd like to assist.

Event Results + Need Wednesday Volunteers!

Sunday, October 14, 2018
SVGD Volunteers:
I've got a couple updates on the results from recent events that I thought you'd like to hear.  The BBQ & Blues event that we assisted at a couple months ago raised $35,500 for Habitat for Humanity!  The check was presented to Habitat this past month.  Also, the Fall Membership Drive that we assisted at a week ago for KUVO  public radio station did raise $105,000 in pledges to help keep the radio station going!  Thanks to those of you that helped us raise money for these great non profits.
We did have a full group of volunteers yesterday to help the American Lung Assn. with their registration & T-shirt/bib hand out for the Run the Rocks event!  Unfortunately, the event was cancelled today due to the weather but they are planning on holding it next Sunday.  They were concerned about driving in the weather as well as running on the course today.
WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING'S GLOW IN THE GARDENS EVENT FOR THE DENVER BOTANIC GARDENS!  The weather actually is supposed to be much better on Wednesday so I know it will be a fun & spooky time.  It's time to get ready for Halloween!  I really need volunteers to sign up by tomorrow (Monday) morning or I will have to cancel this event.  Please sign up soon if you are able to help.  I don't want to let them down!
Also, we are considering having a Thanksgiving Dinner potluck again.  We've done this several times and it has always been well attended.  We have several members who are not able to go to be with their families on Thanksgiving & enjoy having a place to go and meeting some great people.  At this point, I'm asking if anyone in our group would like to host the event at their home.  Please let me know!  You wouldn't have to cook, just have enough room that we could have a group of people (usually around 12) at your home for the Holiday.  Please contact me if you're interested so we can discuss the possibility.  Thank you!

OCTOBER EVENTS

Glow at the Gardens benefiting the Denver Botanic Gardens, Wed. Oct. 17th, 5-10PM, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be Activity Assistants.  We will greet guests and help with the nightly activities, such as greeting at the storyteller area, assisting with craft activities and the Spooky Gardens!  What fun!  The Gardens dress up for Halloween with luminaria-lined pathways, spooky lighting displays and hundreds of carved, glowing gourds. Using all real pumpkins harvested from local farms, their pumpkin artists push the boundaries of traditional pumpkin carving to create larger-than-life sculptures, dense displays of jack-o-lanterns and ornately detailed showpiece pumpkins. In addition to the pumpkin sculptures and creepy atmosphere, enjoy a wide array of activities.  What a good way to get in the mood for Halloween while supporting a great non profit!

Serving Lunch at The Denver Rescue Mission, Sat. Oct. 27th, 10:30AM-1:30PM, 6 Volunteers are needed. We will be helping to serve lunch at their Lawrence Street shelter which is the Mission's most well-known & most recognizable location.  It provides emergency care to the poor and homeless.  It is open 365 days a year and offers 200 beds and

OCTOBER EVENTS

Registration & Packet Pickups for the Run The Rocks event benefiting the American Lung Assn., Sat. Oct. 13th, 9:30AM-2PM,(We still need 4 volunteers for this event!) 6 total Volunteers are needed. We will be helping participants make sure that they have all of their race materials & Tshirts, and getting them signed in for the Run which is on Sunday at Red Rocks.  We will be "running" the booth that is in Lakewood the day prior to the event.  Run the Rocks is a one-of-a-kind fun run/walk supporting the efforts of the American Lung Association in Colorado to support clean air and healthy lungs so that we may continue to LIVE AND BREATHE COLORADO. It was named one of “the best Colorado road races and fun runs of 2017” by The Know at The Denver Post.  This is truly a rocking race offering a 5K Run/Walk and a 10K Run around the Red Rocks Amphitheatre! It is an amazing fun run; has great live local bands along the course, and runners can take in the breathtaking views and scenery and finish on the steps of the Amphitheatre with a cold beer all while supporting a great cause.
