SVGD Volunteer Needs for the Upcoming Week

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

We have two SVGD events coming up in the next week which still need volunteersWe need 4 volunteers for this Saturday's event with Habitat for Humanity.  Although we do some lifting this is not an event which requires any expertise or heavy work.  Please consider helping with this event as we are way short of the number of volunteers we need!  Our volunteers always enjoy the experience. Thanks!
Also the Read Aloud Backpack packing event next Tuesday could still use 2 more volunteers if you'd like to assist.
I've given the information for both of these events below.  I'm hoping some of you are available to help now that life is slowing down a little after the Holidays.  As always, thanks so much for your assistance!  Our volunteers have been doing a great job of coming through when we need them!  You are greatly appreciated!!

SVGD ER Event this Weekend + 2 New Events

Thursday, December 20, 2012

 SVGD Volunteers:

I received a frantic call from Samaritan House today.  They just received several large black plastic bags filled with wrapped gifts.  The problem is that they have no way of knowing what is inside the wrapped package- is it for a woman, man, girl, boy, baby???  With the Holiday gift giving events next week they are in a bind and really need us.  They are hoping a few of our SVGD volunteers can come in on Sunday from 9AM til Noon to help unwrap & organize the gifts.  I know we are all busy!  I'm hoping some of us will be able to help.  Details are below.
The Friday night gift wrapping event is filled (ironically we are doing the opposite of what we'll be doing on Sunday).  There are two other new events in this issue, one for the Read Aloud program at the Denver Public Library where we will be packing backpacks for their early literacy program and another for Habitat for Humanity. Also, please don't forget that our Annual Meeting will be coming up shortly.  To sign up for any of the events below please go to the www.svgd.org web site.
I Hope That Each of You Has a Fantastic Holiday Season!!

SVGD Annual Meeting & Need Board Members

Saturday, December 08, 2012

From SVGD Board Chair Tom Baroch:

As we come to the end of another great year for SVGD, I want to encourage you all to continue to sign up for events and keep doing the wonderful work we’ve been doing for several years. There are a few items to note as we end the 2012 year.

We have a brand new website!! We’ve been talking about it for a couple of years and it is currently up, running and going through some final adjustments at this time. It took the closing of our previous web host to spark the absolute need to upgrade and provide our members with a new site, but it got done. I thank everyone involved, especially Jimmy Wu, who went through this sometimes (often?) frustrating and tedious process. Please bear with us as we continue to learn the full range of options the new site offers us.

It is time to schedule an Annual Meeting for SVGD. We did not have one in January 2012 due to significant scheduling and other issues, so we are scheduling the annual meeting for Thursday, January 10, 2013 in the evening. There are a couple of places we are working with to schedule a meeting. We will give you all the location as soon as we finalize the space. Stay tuned.

Along with filling members in on what SVGD has been up to and where we might like to go in the future is an election of a new Board of Directors for SVGD. The current BOD has been involved for a while now and we would like to find some new people for the Board to offer fresh ideas and leadership on the Board. I will be resigning, but will stay and offer support and assistance to the Board and the new Board Chair whoever that might be.

If you are interested in becoming a board member, staying a board member or coming back, having been a board member, please let me know by December 15. We will have an online vote for board members as well as a vote during the meeting. If you do not respond by that date, you can still be nominated and voted on in the meeting, but will not be included in the online voting. To become a board member or find out more information, please contact me at: tbar1@rocketmail.com with SVGD BOD in the subject line.

*Note that while general SVGD members have to be single (ie., not married or in a serious committed relationship) Board members do not have to be single… and we welcome board members with talent in marketing, legal issues, accounting and finance, business management, event  planning and management, membership/volunteer management, recruiting and retention, etc. Any buiness or organizational talent is welcomed as are people who have not been board members previously.

This has been a good year for SVGD, let’s make 2013 a better one and keep SVGD’s reputation as being the Denver Metro areas premier volunteer organization, helping the nonprofit community manage their fundraising and other organizational events!!

Best,

Tom Baroch

SVGD Board President (Retiring)

REGISTERING FOR EVENTS:  Please remember to give me your first name, last name, and a contact phone number when you register for any of the New or Existing Events below.  This process of registering without our web site is working but I do need to have all your information (include your phone number) since it is not being generated by our system.  Thanks for your assistance with this info. so I don't have to do as many Emails as I get all the registrations organized.

SOCIAL EVENT

Please join us for a night of laughter at the Starz Denver Film Fest,
Fri., Nov. 2, 7PM, Downtown. We have purchased a group of tickets to the movie "Not That Funny" which is really pretty funny!  The price is $12 for SVGD members.  You can bring friends!  The price for them is $14.  When you sign up please let us know how many member tickets & how many guest tickets you are purchasing.

Don't believe the title: Not That Funny is pretty funny. In director/screenwriter Lauralee Farrer's romantic comedy, Prince Charming is a nerd. Although he tells his friends he is "alone but not lonely," Stefan Lane (Tony Hale of Arrested Development) eats Chinese food out of the box, putters around his widowed landlady Toogey's house, and lives a pretty solitary small-town life. When Toogey's beautiful, high-powered granddaughter, Haley, blows into town on the arm of her sleazy Russian boss, she turns Stefan's serious world on its head. He can't take his eyes off her.

Dissatisfied with her stressful life and her jerk of a boyfriend, Haley decides to spend time with Toogey at the family homestead and reclaim happy childhood memories. When Stefan overhears her say all she really wants in a man is someone to make her laugh, he decides then and there to become a comedian. There's just one problem: he's not that funny. Stefan does some Internet research and finds an off-color stand-up comic named Norm Getz, who seems to have women fawning over him. In one of the film's funniest scenes, Stefan stalks Getz, knocks on his door, and begs for humor tips. Meanwhile, Haley, who seems more and more content to be back home, watches Stefan carefully and finds him to be the same solid, reliable type as her beloved grandfather.

New Event:

1.Signature Chefs Auction, Thurs. Oct. 25, 5PM (or as soon after as you can make it) until 10PM. 6 volunteers are needed.
They will host 20 of the area's top chefs in a Downtown Denver hotel.  The goal is to raise $200,000 in support of the March of Dimes mission.  As a volunteer you will be able to sample items from Denver's top chefs and bid on silent/live auction items if you like.  This year's event will have a "bigtop" theme, incorporating adult circus decor and entertainment.  We will assist with the auctions, food etc.  This is an elegant cocktail/dressy event.

 Existing Events:

1.  Harvest Moon Wine & Chocolate Festival benefiting the Spina Bifida Assn., Fri., Oct. 19th, Arrive 5-5:30PM til 10:45PM, 4 volunteers are still needed to help with set up, silent & live auction, and tear down.  The event is at the beautiful Hudson Gardens. There will be a wall of wines, gourmet chocolates, appetizers, and a chocolate therapist.  Guests will be in a tucked away log cabin nestled within the 30-acre botanical gardens along the bank of the South Platte River.  Channel 4's Meteorologist & Reporter, Dave Aguilera will host the event.

2.  Corn Maze benefiting Denver Botanic Gardens, Sat. Oct. 27th, TIME CHANGE TO 3:30-6:15PM
3 volunteers are still needed to assist at this fun event which is located in SW Littleton.  Volunteers will help as wristband checkers, with trivia handout, and as pillow jump attendants.
The winding pathways will have a fruits-and-vegetables-theme this fall, designed to pay tribute to Denver Botanic Gardens' Community Supporting Agriculture (CSA) program. Wind your way through acres of corn, view the design from two 15-foot tall illuminated bridges that overlook the giant Corn Maze, and watch the delight as younger children find their way through a special free McDonald's Mini-Maze designed just for them. Hayrides and pony rides will be available. An array of food vendors will offer some of your favorite fall foods, including freshly squeezed lemonade, funnel cakes, hotdogs and kettle corn. New this year: The Haunted Maze!
