April 29, 2019

SVGD Volunteers:
We just had a fantastic weekend with two events!  We helped Cafe 180 that provides meals for people who can't afford to pay for their meals on Saturday & ran the Cherry Creek Sneak Beer Garden on Sunday helping to provide funds so that good food doesn't go into the dumpsters & landfills but, rather, goes to people who need the food!  Thank you to all of you who volunteered at the events!
I've just put another event on our SVGD web site so there are now two May events (the first this upcoming weekend) for which you can register.  We will be helping at the registration area for the MS Walk in City Park this upcoming Saturday and will be helping at The Denver Botanic Gardens Spring Plant Sale the following Saturday.  Please sign up soon if you can help at either of these events.  The weather is supposed to be great this Saturday so we should have a fantastic time while helping a good cause!  I know that MS has touched many of our lives and many of us know family and/or friends who have been impacted by this illness.
Details for both of these events are given below.  I hope to see you there as we continue to give back to our community!

MAY EVENTS:

MS Walk Registration Tent, Sat.,May 4 6-11:30AM, 6 Volunteers are needed. This event will be held at Denver City Park.  This is a 5K Run & Walk.  Walk MS brings together a community of passionate people for one powerful cause: to end MS forever. And with every step they take and every dollar they raise... they're that much closer. The National MS Society is the largest private funder of MS research in the world.  Right now the Denver event already has over 2,000 registered participants! Their goal is $850,000 in fundraising and 5,500 registrants.  It's an exciting event where they have a program and lots going on.

Spring Plant Sale benefiting Denver Botanic Gardens, Sat. May 11th, 7:15AM- 12:30PM, 6 Volunteers are neededWe will be helping as cashier's assistants who help the customers with their carts containing the plants they wish to purchase. This is one of the Botanic Gardens biggest events.  They will provide both breakfast & lunch as well as snacks, coffee, and beverages.  Also all volunteers will get 10% off any plants they wish to purchase as the event does continue on after our shift ends as well as a 10% discount at their Cafe if they would like to make a purchase there! We have done this event previously and the volunteers really liked it.  This should be a fun experience!

NEED EVENT CAPTAINS: Right now I am short on Event Captains due to several people now having health, work, or other personal issues.  I can't lead all the events myself so really depend on having Event Captains so we can offer several events each month.  As an Event Captain you do not have to plan the event. You confirm the attendance for the volunteers who have registered and give them the event information. Then you attend the event to check in the group and make sure everyone knows what to do. I provide a training sheet & information on the event to you.  I could really use a few new Event Captains!  You get to pick the events that you wish to lead.  Please let me know if you would like to help.  It's a fun position!!

FUTURE EVENTS:
The following events are going to be upcoming but I don't have either the Event Captains or all the details yet.  Some of our members do like to get their schedule planned as soon as possible so I'm listing these so you can "pencil them" in to your schedule.  I will let you know when I have all the information & have put them on the web site so you can "officially" register.

Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day)- Victory for Veterans "Flower on Every Grave" event at Ft. Logan Cemetary- AM
Wed, May 29th We will be helping Warren Village with their Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
June 1- Chalk Fest at Larimer Square- we will be running an alcohol booth from 9:30AM-2PM- in support of the Larimer Square Arts Assn.
Sat. & Sun., June 15th & 16th- Our Fundraiser at PrideFest in Civic Center Park- you are welcome to invite friends and fellow employees
Fri., Sat.,& Sun., July 5th, 6th, & 7th- Our Fundraiser at Cherry Creek Arts Festival- again you are welcome to invite friends and fellow employees

If you know of any non-profit organizations that can use a group of 6 or more volunteers during an upcoming evening or weekend please feel free to give me the information as I'll be glad to explore the possibility of organizing a group of our SVGD volunteers to assist!  Thank you!

SVGD Volunteers:
I just put another event on our SVGD web site for which you can now register!  We will be helping the MS Walk on Saturday, May 4that their Registration Tent!  This is a new event for us and is for a very worthwhile cause.  I hope to see you there!
Meanwhile, we can still use some volunteers for this weekend!  We can use 1 more volunteer at Cafe 180 on Saturday and 4 more people at the Cherry Creek Sneak beer booth on Sunday! The runners & walkers at the Cherry Creek Sneak all get a free coupon for a beer after they finish.  They are a great group & we'll be busy as we become a very popular booth after the races.  It is such a fun event with so many activities happening!  We'll be very short-handed without the 4 additional volunteers so please sign up soon if you can help!  Thank you!

 APRIL EVENTS:

Cafe 180 benefiting those who can't pay for their meals, Sat.,April 27th 12:30-3PM, (We can still use 1 volunteer on Saturday) 5 total Volunteers will be assisting to serve customers, help prepare food, yes, even help clean up!  Cafe 180's mission is to reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.  Not only do they serve up delicious food, they serve up respect, dignity & self sufficiency.  We helped them a few times and really enjoyed the experience.  Plus we each had a great meal when we completed our shift!  They say:  "we've all relied on the kindness of others at certain times in our lives... For those who have enough, it's a chance to eat well and do well. For those who are struggling, it's a chance to eat in a dignified manner.  We're not about hand outs.  We're about giving people a hand up..."  Volunteers need to wear comfortable shoes & anyone with long hair needs to have it pulled back.  The group will have cafe' shirts to wear when they get there. The location for the event is near Hampden/Broadway.   What a great opportunity!

Cherry Creek Sneak, Sun.April 28th, 8:30AM-Noon. (WE STILL NEED 4 VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS SUNDAY!!) 6 total Volunteers will be assisting. We will be beer pourers for this event. Many of our patrons will be the runners in the event who receive a beer certificate.  This event is  such a well-known Denver tradition.  The race is on 1st Avenue, in the Cherry Creek area.  They also have a great after party with a costume contest, music, vendors, etc.  Since we will be "beer pourers" we won't have to be there super early like the volunteers for the registration etc. (6AM for them!)  The Cherry Creek Sneak offers run/walk courses for all levels.  They partner with the We Don't Waste non profit so that food goes to those who need it rather than landfills.  The Sneak’s after-race festivities have turned into Denver’s biggest block party—post-race fun draws nearly 20,000 racers, friends, and family for music, cool vendors, a costume contest,  and a Kids’ Fun Zone sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Proceeds benefit Food Bank of the Rockies, a non-profit organization providing food and supplies to more than 1000 hunger-relief programs in Northern Colorado and Wyoming.

First of all though, we've had a volunteer cancellation for tomorrow evening's Puttin on the Leash Silent Auction benefiting the Boulder Humane Society.  If you'd like to have a great time tomorrow evening while helping a very worthwhile non profit please sign up SOON!  Thanks for your help!  We've had enough volunteers sign up but then have ER's so we've had to get more.  THE END RESULT IS THAT WE STILL NEED 1 PERSON FOR TOMORROW EVENING IF YOU CAN HELP!

 APRIL EVENTS:

Puttin' on the Leash benefiting the Boulder Humane Society, Sat. April 13th, 5-8:30PM (Volunteer Dinner will be prior to that starting at 4PM) -We still need 1 volunteer for tomorrow's event! 6 Volunteers in total will be helping with the Silent Auction. We have helped with this for several years & our volunteers always have a fantastic time!!  They always put on a great program plus literally raise hundreds of thousands of dollars!  It's one of the most successful silent auctions that we attend.  It's a lot of fun and we always have a good time at the Coors Event Center in Boulder.  We will be glad to arrange carpooling if you'd like. The dollars they raise help many abandoned & needed pets.  They treat us well as volunteers, provide dinner before we start, and there's lots going on during the event.  You'll be happy you helped & came to see this fantastic event!
